Halloween Review 2019: Zombie Skittles!
It seems like Halloween is overlooked or passed over quickly, unlike Christmas stuff which basically starts hitting shelves in between the peak of the Halloween season. But not this year! It's August and already we're starting to see Halloween junk food hit shelves in stores. Anyone who knows me can assume what dumb smile I have on my face right now. Anyways, Skittles seems to be among the first companies to debut their Halloween themed candies this year with Zombie Skittles!
The packaging for the Zombie Skittles is relatively mediocre. It's not like the Cauldron Skittles that we had the past few years, but it works. The flavors are Petrifying Citrus Punch, Mummified Melon, Chilling Black Cherry, Boogeyman Blackberry and Blood Red Berry. Off to the side of the flavors on the back is a warning - "Beware!!! Rotten Zombie taste can be hiding behind any of these colors!" So, basically, tread lightly... a few of these are going to taste like absolute dog shit. Upon opening the bag I gave it a quick smell. You can smell the fruitiness of the skittles, but there is a slight off-putting smell in the mix as well. The colors aren't at all pastel like as they are shown on the back of the packaging. Honestly, they're the same exact colors as regular Skittles.
I went with Chilling Black Cherry first. Basically, it's like a deeper, more sophisticated tasting cherry cough drop. I'm not complaining at all, this tasted pretty damn good. Boogeyman Blackberry is tough for me to describe. I don't think I've tasted anything quite like it before. Sort of like a sweeter Ghoulaid in candy form. I tried it again just to make sure. While trying these flavors with caution, because you're guaranteed to as least get one that tastes like bad, I feel like that sort of does things to your head. Is this suppose to taste bad? Is it the zombie one? Let me tell you, when you have a zombie flavored one you'll know for sure! If you've ever had the pleasure of trying the Harry Potter Jelly Belly jelly beans, this is so much worse for two reasons; 1. because it's a harder chewier candy... when you pop one of these in your gullet, you're committed unless you spit it out. And 2. these zombie ones seem way more potent than any of the Harry Potter jelly beans. Some of you might be asking "what does Rotten Zombie taste like?" Like shit. I popped an orange one in and as soon as I bit down I got this overwhelming rotten milk sort of ammonia like taste. It was super potent; it took my breath away. My involuntary response was to spit this out immediately, which I did. Literally just one bite down and chucked right in the garbage. So, now it's more of a game to not get a bad one to finish the rest of this review. Treading lightly still, I move on to the Blood Red Berry. I kind of got this strawberry flavor at first but the more I tasted I felt like it was a lot like Stripe Gum but a little stronger flavor. I built up the courage to try another Orange one and it actually tasted quite nice. Like a more flavorful orange Starburst. And last but not least Mummified Melon. I saved this one for last as Melon is one of my favorite flavors. And it tastes just like everything else Melon I personally enjoy. If you've tried the water melon flavored Nickelodeon Green Slime Popsicles, it's almost identical to that. Or if you've never tried those, it's a lot like the Melon flavored Powerade (which is still available).
In all honesty, I think Skittles did a good job with these. You get the trick and the treat and I really enjoyed the ones that didn't taste like Rotten Zombie. It did make me not want to finish the whole bag (which I didn't). Would I buy them again? Only to display an unopened one on my shelf. And shout out to Skittles for Halloween candy as early as August 1st! Did you try the new Zombie Skittles? How did you react to the Rotten Zombie flavor? Let us know in the comments!
