HALLOWEEN IS HERE!! And because of that, us here at the comic corner want to make sure to give you one last awesome recommendation before the spooky season is officially over (but let’s be real, for folks like us spooky season is NEVER over). This week we take a look at the Marvel weekly series Contagion (2019).

Contagion is a five-issue mini event mostly centered around Ben Grimm, The Thing, and Danny Rand, The Iron Fist. Because of some shenanigans at K’un-Lun a weird fungus is released and everyone it touches becomes infected. Using one of the monks from the mystical city, that fungus makes it way to New York City. Yancy Street to be exact, where it resurfaces and infects three of the four members of the Fantastic Four leaving Ben Grimm to figure out what’s next.

While Ben is dealing with the Urchin, the name given to the magical fungus, Danny Rand and others from K’un-Lun are tracking down the Urchin and run into Ben. With the Fantastic Four out of commission and Danny calls in some of the other street level heroes but they get infected too. This goes on for a while until it’s just Moon Knight, Jessica Jones, Danny, Ben Grimm, and a few magic based characters I haven’t seen before. Every one of the infected heroes (The Avengers, Spiderman, Punisher, literally every hero in New York), rises to take out this rag team of survivors. Just when all hope is lost, Moon Knight jumps into the fungus becoming infected so his mind merges with the hive mind of the infected. Once in the creature’s mind, he uses his powers of being a crazy person (no seriously, go look up his “powers”. Moon Knight is basically just Batman with 19 different voices in his head and the mental stability of Deadpool. It’s awesome.) to overwhelm the creature’s mind and sever the links to all the infected heroes.

It’s a pretty crazy story with a lot of B, C, and D list characters but it’s also been a lot of fun to read all month. With only 5 issues, it would be a breeze to go through them all pretty quickly, but you still get a good story to sink your teeth into. The artwork is pretty surreal, especially the splashes of the infected heroes. The Cover gallery for the series is also pretty on point with some of them being just downright eerie.

That’s all for today, leave your thoughts in the comments and any other comics that you think deserve the spotlight in the coming weeks! See you next week and don’t be afraid to crease the corners on a good panel!
