THE BEST SNACKS OF FALL AND HALLOWEEN 2021!
HALLOWEEN/FALL SNACKS 2021 PT. 1
GRIMEY
At long last, it is the middle of September which, in our eyes, is the beginning of Halloween! Okay, maybe I feel like the end of 4th of July is the beginning of Halloween but whatever! It's time to look at some cool Halloween junk food for the 2021 haunting season! Don't be surpised if I don't hit every single item this year, there are an absolute ton of them with no end in sight!
SKITTLES SHRIEKERS
I found these almost immediately towards the end of July at Sheetz and I've been dying to try them. Typically, since I write about these things, I try to get these written as soon as I get the items to feel a little more prepared but not this year. I waited until basically now to review and write. Imagine the stress.
We got Citrus Scream, Ghoulish Green Apple, Rattled Raspberry, Shocking Lime and Spine-Tingling Tangerine. Zombie Skittles have been dropped after two consecutive years and these are the exchange. They stuck with the surprise Skittle gimmick which I enjoy; even more so now that the surprise isn't absolute dog shit. The idea is that, randomly, you might happen upon an extremely sour Skittle hidden among the bunch. It's true, they are sour but not near sour enough to make you cough or spit it out immediately in the garbage; they're actually very enjoyable!
Skittles are my favorite fruity candy; throw a black wrapper on them, call em' "Shriekers" and slap a screaming grim reaper on the front and you have yourself an awesome Halloween candy! I couldn't go lower than a 9 out of 10. These are absolutely my jam!
MOUNTAIN DEW "VOODEW" 3
The triumphant return of Halloweens new ghostly white soda king, Voodew III. I love when this thing hits super early in the year and all we have is the colors on the label to draw any kind of clue what the flavor might be. Add that with whatever rumor or early review you read from the big junk food gurus who get these way before all of us and it makes things interesting immediately! I feel like it almost confuses you hearing what others think.
They said what they thought it tastes like so, naturally, if you're thinking about what they said as you try it, you're going to taste what they did. So, I avoided any and ALL spoilers aside from the art alone.
At first glance, the main color is blue on the label. Last years was fruit candy explosion (AKA Skittles) and before that was Candy Corn. All had corresponding colors to go with the theme. I'm assuming it has to be something blue raspberry or maybe even blueberry. I feel like the smell I get is almost Gusher like but as far as taste, I definitely could see this being something blue raspberry. After I tried, I had to see what others were saying. I've seen Twizzlers, Starburst, Skittles (again, ugh) and Air Heads but taking into consideration the colors on the label and flavor I'm going to guess it's Blue Raspberry Sour Punch Straws. The color scheme is totally there and the flavor isn't too far away, in my mind. I'm probably wrong, but I'm sticking to what I said.
Either way I look at this, it's still my favorite one so far out of the three. I feel it's the most different one they've done yet. This gets a solid 10 out of 10! Hopefully, we get to see many more Voodews than the reaper on the front can count on two hands!
NERDS CANDY CORN
I feel like Nerds are sort of the underdog of the candy world. What I mean is, I haven't had plain ass Nerds since I was like 5 and I can't believe they're still a thing. I'll give them huge credit for constantly changing the game, though! They made huge chewy Nerds, Nerds attached to ropes…. they even made Nerds stuck to globs of gummy candy (phenomenal, by the way) and now, we have Nerds Candy Corn.
I could write three paragraphs on the flavor combinations alone that they chose to included but I'll just keep it short and say that each flavor is coated in a completely different flavored shell. What a wild lineup; each flavor is coated in a different flavored shell! I will say that the orange ones somewhat resemble the flavor of orange Tic-Tacs, grape is tastes exactly like grape Bottle Caps candy and the watermelon ones managed to be 1000% more sour than the Shriekers Skittles. Definitely was not expecting that. It’s been so long since I’ve had just regular ol’ Nerds but from what I think I remember, these are spot on.
All in all, I give Nerds Candy Corn a 9 out of 10. I enjoy regular candy corn (I know, I'm a rarity) but these are one of the better fruity candy versions of candy corn I've had to date.
APPLE CIDER DONUT OREOS
In my opinion, apple stuff is right up there with pumpkin spice stuff, if not better (I said what I said), and it's only time that apple stuff starts to take over a little more. With the help of Oreo, who could say no? I obviously didn't. Found at Dollar General as soon early as Aug 14th, I did NOT wait to tear into these bad boys for two reasons. 1. They're just too beautiful not to tear into and 2. I found them a few days before the official release and I liked the idea of maybe possibly being the first person to deep fry (air fry rather) Apple Cider Donut Oreos!
I have to say, it's a 10 out of 10. These are legit everything I hoped for and more. Once I deepfried (airfried) them, the basically melted away to a baked apple heaven. What's not to love?
SHEETZ PUMPKIN PIE SODA
I noticed a while ago that Sheetz was no longer down with the clown and decided to do away with Faygo in the coolers replacing it with their very own Sheetz Pop which is sort of... identical to what Faygo is. Not sure if they are one in the same or not... not important. What IS important; Pumpkin Pie Sheetz Pop! I caught wind of the new Pupmkin Pie flavored soda on Aug 11th while I was at my job and immediately made a pit stop on the road to the nearest Sheetz who indeed had it for a week or so as the Cashier mentioned.
Pumpkin Pie Sheetz Pop is an interesting one. I don't know if they intended on it tasting almost identical to a regular Pepsi with a hint of Pupmkin Pie but that's exactly what I got out of it. I'm assuming, since I wasn't able to snag any, that this taste relatively similar to the Pepsi Apple Pie drink that hit last year around this time. It's a lot more delicious in real life than it might sound on paper, trust me.
I'm giving Pumpkin Pie Sheetz Pop a 7 out of 10. It's enjoyable but I do wish it had a little more pumpkin to it to really allow it to shine.
I'd say that's a fairly decent start to an interesting year of Halloween goodies. There are so SO many of them out there (new AND returning in different forms) yet to come! Thanks for reading!
