RAD COMMERCIALS VOL. 4: EVEN SPOOKIER THAN THE LAST!

RAD COMMERCIALS VOL. 4!

GRIMEY

I figured it was probably time for another installment of Rad Commercials. And of course, since it's the haunting season, we're keeping things spooky yet again. Let's dig in!

SIMPSONS SPOOKY LIGHT UPS (BURGER KING, 2001)

Between Derek and I, a lot has been said about this specific commercial. To say we are big fans of The Simpsons would be a huge understatement; we absolutely adore The Simpsons, ESPECIALLY anything that includes the Treehouse of Horror.

I'm not sure what’s more to love about this one; the spooky black cherry slushy that turns your mouth black or the toys that some might say were the best Simpsons figures to date at that time. It was a true match made in Halloween heaven! I also love that the treehouse is referenced in this quick commercial while it’s only referenced once in the very first Treehouse of Horror episode and never to be seen or mentioned again on the show.

PIZZA HUT HALLOWEEN SAFETY (1986)

I know that most of us didn't realize how cool commercials were when we were kids but I can specifically being least interested with these types of commercials; the Halloween safety type. Much to my surprise, they're some of my favorites now.

I like seeing each ones take on Halloween safety. Will it be the glowstick route? Or maybe the reflectors all over the costume? How about a sweet shiny yellow bag with a jackolantern on the front from Pizza Hut? I'll take 12, please. This just reminds me that some lucky kids went to Pizza Hut before trick or treating and also got this beautiful bag to show off and house their candy in. Not a bad night if you ask me.

NESTLE BUNCHA CRUNCH (1993)

In 1993, the movie Addams Family Values hit theaters and they struck a deal with Nestlé. From that moment forward, I have always remembered Buncha Crunch and The Addams Family as a bit of an item.

They chose to use Thing in the commercial as well as a Nestlé spin of The Addams Family theme song. Fun fact, if you happen to notice the little girl in the commercial, that is a very young, pre Nickelodeon Amanda Bynes enjoying herself some Buncha Crunch!

REESES COUNT DRACULA (1990)

I hesitated to add this one, it's practically the Halloween version of the Hershey Kiss Christmas Bell commercial but... I absolutely could not resist. Like a lot of other Halloween commercials, this one I can remember lasting well after the season. How do I know? Well, it hit in 1990... I was a whole year old then and would never have remembered but I definitely remember seeing this often later when I was maybe 4 or 5.

I loved all of these "no wrong way to eat a Reese's" commercials and this was one of the very best versions. I always tried to mimic what they did in the commercial but Dracs was a toughy. How the hell did he actually eat the peanut butter first? A couple of straws, perhaps?

MCDONALDS HALLOWEEN COUPONS (1979)

This one. I don’t believe I've ever actually seen on TV before as it's well before my time of '89; this puppy hit in 1979. And oh my god... a book of 20 certificates only cost a buck? Can't beat that!

I remember receiving McDonald's coupons as a kid and hated it. When I look back now, I'm almost ashamed of my younger self. Snagging one of these during trick or treating meant that you were basically guaranteed a trip to McDonald's in the future and what kid didn't want that? Sure... the coupons were usually good for a small soft drink or a baby cone but there was no way my parents were going to get just the cone or the drink. It almost always resulted in a Happy Meal which meant I got a sweet new McDonald's toy. Ah... simpler times.

I hope you enjoyed revisiting these old spooky commercials. There are a couple hundred or so playlists full of them on YouTube and I like to throw them on in the background while I do every day ordinary things like washing dishes, cooking dinner and staring at the wall by myself. It just makes everything that much better and I think you’ll enjoy it too! Thanks for reading!
