Prime Slime, Pt. 1!
Whether it's from goofy game shows, class 5 full roaming vapors, anthropomorphic reptiles or ASMR videos; there is a good chance you've encountered some form or another of slime. It's everywhere! Here, you might not find videos of fingers poking slime to make weird noise, but you will find random things, old and new, that have to do with this popular compound!
Diamond Select The Real Ghostbusters Slimer Action Figure
Slimer is a character who needs absolutely no introduction! There have been many different Slimer figures but this, for me, is the end all be all Slimer of Slimers. He's a relatively new figure (preorders went up on June 20th 2018) but Diamond Select captured the iconic 1986 cartoon version of our favorite little spud perfectly! Side note, if you haven't seen the Ghostbuster movie Slimer they did, in my opinion, this is a huge upgrade from that even if they used basically the same mold and just tweaked the arms and color a little bit.
Slimer comes with a couple swap-able heads for different expressions, a diorama piece of the Ghostbusters firehouse, and a clear stand to hold the figure up. The stand isn't perfect ( and mine actually busted on a few of the joints) but, with some minor tweaking with a screw driver, I made it work. I've only recently in the past 5 years started buying Ghostbusters toys. I've never owned any from the original Kenner line, unfortunately, but Diamond Select more than made up for my missing out with their Real Ghostbusters line.
2017 NSI Nickelodeon Gak Super Stretch
In 1992, Nickelodeon and Mattel introduced it's fans to a slime like compound called Gak which came in these hard plastic rounded star shaped containers. With other slime like toys being on the market, what set Gak apart from all others originally was that it made fart noises when you'd smoosh it back into the container (this is mentioned on the packaging as "FRRRT it!"). It also held it's shape unlike most traditional slime toys. Since the release of Gak, it has seen all kinds of different forms and reboots over the years (honorable mentions: Gak in the Dark, Solar Gak, Smell my Gak, Gaks Alive, Mood Gak, Galactic Gak..... the list goes on).
As a kid in the 90's, I can remember owning multiple containers of different colored Gak. They would never last longer than a few days; they'd usually harden up from not being closed all the way or somehow made it to a nearby carpet where it would be eternally ruined by floor spice. This particular Gak comes from the company NSI in 2017. These newer Gak containers are a lot smaller than the originals, as you can see, and are also a lot more flimsy and don't offer as much air space to make cool fart noises. Also, upon opening it now for the first time, this may be because mine is older and it sat through temperature changes and whatnot, but it's a lot runnier than what I remember Gak being. It's very sticky and doesn't like to come off of whatever it touches unless you use a napkin. I remember Gak having a specific smell as well, this doesn't quite do it for my nostalgia senses. I'm not sure if they use the same ingredients for the new Gak or not. Sort of disappointing. But if you happen to have old Gak containers that are either dried up or empty, this is a perfect replacement, look wise!
2018 Neca TMNT Mutagen Canister Prop Replica
Okay, it's not slime, it's ooze. But, still.... out of all the TMNT merchandise, it took 28 years for a mutagen canister replica to come about thanks to the awesome peeps at Neca and I couldn't miss an opportunity to gush about what a great job they did with this piece! I'm assuming it's the same scale as the film used canister but I'm not 100% certain. It has some painted on scuff marks in a brownish rust kind of color and there is an open crack in the middle of the glass. If you unscrew and pop off the left side of the canister, there is a little switch which turns on a green light and I have to say, it looks great displayed this way! You wouldn't think this thing would come with any other accessories but it does come with ooze in this sweet beaker style container! The ooze in this is quite a bit solid. It holds it's form pretty well much like Gak does. All in all, it feels great to finally hold one of these bad boys in hand. Ever since I saw the 1990 film (and also Secret of the Ooze) I've dreamt of being able to own and hold one of these guys.
Jell-O Play Edible Monster Slime
Slime has been seeing this strange resurgence over the past few years, but nothing more strange than this one right here. Jell-O decided to go the extra step and make an edible slime that you can play with and eat. I checked YouTube before I even bothered purchasing and making this item just to make extra sure what I was in store for. Sadly, this thing is not a winner at all. Opening this thing up, it's just a white powder with a big scooper on the inside (seriously, it's like a 3rd of the size of the container). It didn't smell like anything at all. You take 3 level scoops of the powder and one scoop of warm water. Instantly, the powder turned from white to a pale green and sort of smelled like it had a hint of lime. As I mixed, I noticed it getting harder (you're only suppose to mix for 30 seconds). If you've ever made slime with corn starch, this is that..... with a hint of lime and green food coloring. It's solid as long as you're playing with it and turns liquid when you stop. I added a little more water to it at the end for a little different consistency. Let me start my taste evaluation of with.... this doesn't taste good at all. From the flavor to the texture. I almost can't believe they allowed this to happen. It was sort of fun to play around with, but I can't see kids actually enjoying the eating part. I'm not a germaphobe, honestly, but the idea of playing with this thing a bunch and then ingesting it sort of makes my skin crawl. I'll at least hold on to the rest of the container and keep it for display purposes.
Bonus: Mattel Nickelodeon Solar Gak
As a little added bonus I give you Nickelodeon Solar Gak from Mattel! I'm not sure exactly when this came out as the packaging says 1992 and 1993, yet sources online say 1995. This specific Gak turns colors in sunlight. I had experimented a little with light bulbs and found that it does not seem to work with unnatural lighting. This came from Ebay just a couple days ago (right on time for this article to be written) and is completely dried up. But, it does still change colors! It also smells exactly how I remember Gak smelling unlike the newer stuff (sweet slimy nectar).
I hope you enjoyed reading about old and new Gak, mutagen canisters, disgusting Jell-O and slimy ghosts as much as I enjoyed writing about them! What are some of your favorite things that have to do with slime? We want to know!
