HALLOWEEN IS HERE

HALLOWEEN IS HERE!

Grimey

The Halloween season is upon us and, to say the least, we all know this particular season is going to be a weird one. It's anyone's guess whether or not most festivities will be full blown, nothing at all, or some strange new take on "normal" to make things work for everyone. But here at Dem Boys, we agree that it's positively nothing to get discouraged about. Halloween isn't necessarily just one day of handing out candy to spooky costumed kiddos; it's a vibe. And plus, we're adults; Halloween can be anything any day or time of the week. We'll do our best to help along the way starting today with things you can do for Halloween in 2020.

OOOOO, THAT SMELL!

CANDLES.jpg

Of course, this is a no brainer but allow me to remind you if you haven't already been to Bath and Body Works for the 12th time this month. Ditch the pineapple and watermelon scented candles and replace them with some fresh fall and Halloween candles. Smells are important. When we attempt to recall memories we rarely think back to our feelings and focus more on details from our senses. Never underestimate the power of a deep breath with a good smelling "spiced apple cider" or "thankful pumpkin harvest" candle directly under your sniffer. It practically puts you back to the first time you watched Hocus Pocus or that one Halloween you scored a full size Snickers bar from the old lady down the street. It might even remind you of that time you tp'd the shit out of your neighbors house on devils night because they ran over your skateboard.

DECORATE!

DECORATIONS.jpg

In the event that halloween parties, get togethers, haunts, attractions and trick or treating aren't an option this year there is no harm in going all out with your decor. A tradition that my folks treated us kids to back when, loading us up in the car and checking out all the cool decorations on houses in the surrounding neighborhoods, was always something I looked forward to. Even now, it's something I still appreciate doing when I have time. And there is absolutely nothing more lame during the season like an entire neighborhood not participating. I personally plan to go the hardest I ever have this time around even if the big payoff is simply the kids next door having something cool to look at or the lady next door passing out from all the blood. It'll all be worth it. It could be something as little as carving a few a jack-o-lanterns or our next bullet....

BUILD A PROP!

PROP.jpg

While it's fun walking into a Spirit Halloween and going broke after buying 2 moderately usable things, it can be a lot of fun making your own props. I'll be the first to admit, as an avid yard haunter, I'm still learning this DIY stuff. But youtube and Pinterest are your friends. If I need to know how something is made or how to tackle a specific project, that's where I go. But, for our viewers, anything I make this year will be documented here in detail for your viewing pleasure. From something simple like a wooden fence made from a stack of pallets to a tiny bit more advanced like corpsing a life size skeleton; surely there will be something to catch your eye.

ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS

We all know that for the most part everything fun is either cancelled or still in the air. We have to rely on simple things to keep us entertained. I don't have cable unfortunately but I do have a subscription to just about every streaming service available to me and let me tell you, there are a lot of good titles on each one of them at this very moment. Like we always do, we will be making all kinds of daily movie and television recommendations which may be of interest. Some titles we mention you might already know are there and some might surprise you. It's a fairly easy way to enjoy this time of year kicking back with a big bowl of popcorn in your favorite lounging attire and a good spooky film or TV episode. In fact, fuck it, just straight up be a kid again; carve a pumpkin, make a shitty microwavable/oven pizza (or just order), throw your favorite fun sized candy in a jackolantern pail and watch something fitting for the occasion and use your csrved pumpkin for light. Relive what Halloween was all about for us as kids. If tv isn't quite your thing, grab a spooky book, comic or graphic novel.

MAKE SPOOKY RECIPES!

When you go to check out next time you're at a store, keep an eye open for those sweet seasonal cookbooks that have been around since forever. This time of year always brings treasures to these little books. Plan a day or two where you make something a little different for  an appetizer, dinner or for a dessert. While most of the recipes are basic recipes disguised to look like something else, keep it interesting and try something you haven't before if you can. Or, make up your own. We will share a different recipe once in a while through the season to help you if you don't feel like scrolling through pinterest all day.

See? Don't get discouraged just yet! The season has only just begun and while we didn't lay out every possible activity here, be sure to check back often; you might be in for a few surprises. As always, thanks for reading!
